CHARTER PROJECT
Grant Matching

Under the direction of the Lead Hill School Board, steps are being taken to see that Lead Hill Schools are the choice for Lead Hill residents. Lead Hill Schools have begun to make long strides toward overcoming many of the hardships and deficiencies that have resulted from legislation seeking to close small schools in our area.
In June 2005 Lead Hill School applied for an Immediate Needs Grant. The district qualified for $89,000, but this grant cannot be awarded until the school demonstrates it can provide matching funds of $102,000. 47% of the project will be paid by the state to roof the K-3 building, upgrade the fire alarm system and storm drainage systems. In addition, the science building will receive a much needed face lift.

Our
Did You Know?
• The term small school means different things to different people.

• Most effective small schools serve between 200 and 400 students.

• They are autonomous. The local school administrators retain the primary authority to make decisions affecting the important aspects of the school.

• Their academic goals are distinctive and focused.

• They are personal. Every student is known throughout the school.

• They are committed to equity in educational achievement.

• They use multiple forms of assessment
to report student accomplishments and guide their school improvement plans.

• They view parents as critical allies and find significant ways to include them in the life of the school community.

• We believe the phrase small school is more than just a definition of size. It is an identifier for those schools that share a common core of characteristics.

• Students are known by their teachers: discipline problems and drop out rates go down and at attendance goes up.

• They are schools of choice!

Small rural schools allow students to participate in activities unavailable in urban school settings.
